Abstract

Thin films play a key role in the material science of microelectronics, and the subject matter of thin-films divides naturally into two headings: processing / structure relationship, and structure / properties relationship. The first volume of Materials Science in Microelectronics focuses on the first relationship - that between processing and the structure of the thin-film. The state of the thin film's surface during the period that one monolayer exists - before being buried in the next layer - determines the ultimate structure of the thin film, and thus its properties. Abstract

This book provides a concise and didactically structured presentation of nanotechnology as matters stand. Both students and engineers can gain valuable insights into the historical development, production, and characterization procedures of structures in the nanometer range, their electrical applications, measuring procedures for the determination of nanodefect, nanolayer, and nanoparticle characteristics, and the major techniques of preparation in nanotechnology. Based on known facts, an evaluation of nanotechnology, its further development, and its future prospects are attempted. Wolfgang Fahrner (*1945) received his education in Freiburg and Darmstadt, Germany, and in Montpellier (France). He was awarded a doctorate for his thesis on "Ion implantation in MOS". His research includes measurement of minority carrier lifetimes (IBM East Fishkill), passivation of power devices and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (Fraunhofer Society), and radiation damage in semiconductors (Hahn-Meitner Institute, Berlin). In 1981, Prof. Fahrner obtained his postdoctoral qualification at Berlin Technical University’s Department of Electrical Engineering. In 1986, he was appointed associate professor and in 1988, he was offered the Chair of Electronic Devices at Hagen University. Prof. Fahrner is a member of the Electrochemical Society, DPG, IEEE Senior Member, and has initiated the "Nanotechnology Cooperation NRW".

Abstract

Stressing common characteristics and real applications of the most used microcontrollers, this practical guide provides readers with hands-on knowledge of how to implement three families of microcontrollers (HC11, AVR, and 8051). Unlike the rest of the ocean of literature on individual chips, Microcontrollers in Practice supplieS side-by-side comparisons and an overview that treats the systems as resources available for implementation. Packed with hundred of practical examples and exercises to foster mastery of concepts and details, the guide also includes several extended projects. By treating the less expensive 8-bit and RISC microcontrollers, this information-dense manual equips students and home-experimenters with the know-how to put these devices into operation.

Abstract

I am honored to write the foreword for Chandra Thimmannagari’s book on CPU design. Chandra’s book provides a practical overview of Microprocessor and high end ASIC design as practiced today. It is a valuable addition to the literature on CPU design, and is made possible by Chandra’s unique combination of extensive hands-on CPU design experience at companies such as AMD and Sun Microsystems and a passion for writing. Technical books related to CPU design are almost always written by researchers in academia or industry and tend to pick one area, CPU architecture/Bus architecture/ CMOS design that is the area of expertise of the author, and present that in great detail. Suchbooks are of great value to students and practitioners in that area. However, engineers working on CPU design need to develop an understanding of areas outside their own to be effective. CPU design is a multi dimensional problem and one dimensional optimization is often counterproductive.

Abstract

System on Chip (SOC) having both digital and analog circuits has become increasingly prevalent in integrated circuit manufacturing industry. Electronic tests are classified as digital, analog and mixed signal. Current methodologies for the testing of digital circuits are well developed. In contrast, methodologies for the testing of analog circuits remain relatively underdeveloped due to the complex nature of analog signals. Compared to digital testing, analog testing lags far behind in methodologies and tools and therefore demands substantial research and development effort. Fault Diagnosis of Analog Integrated Circuits is a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate level students as well as practicing engineers. The objective of this book is to study the testing and fault diagnosis of analog and analog part of mixed signal circuits. A background in analog integrated circuit, artificial neural network is desirable but not essential. The text covers the testing and fault diagnosis of both bipolar and Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) circuits. Fault model of the devices in analog domain has been introduced in the text. The test stimulus generations are also discussed in details. Experimental verification of some state of the art techniques has also been presented in the book. It also contains problems that can be used as quiz or homework. This book enables the reader to test an analog circuit that is implemented either in bipolar or MOS technology.

Abstract

To meet the demands of today's highly competitive market, analog electronics designers must develop their IC designs in a minimum of time. The difference between first- and second-time right seriously affects a company's share of the market. Analog designers are therefore in need for structured design methods together with the theory and tools to support them, especially when pushing the performance limits in high-performance designs. Systematic Modeling and Analysis of Telecom Frontends and Their Building Blocks aims to help designers in speeding up telecommunication frontend design by offeri

Abstract

VLSI-Design for Non-Volatile Memories is intended for electrical engineers and graduate students who want to enter into the integrated circuit design world. Non-volatile memories are treated as an example to explain general design concepts. Practical illustrative examples of non-volatile memories, including flash types, are showcased to give insightful examples of the discussed design approaches. A collection of photos is included to make the reader familiar with silicon aspects. Throughout all parts of this book, the authors have taken a practical and applications-driven point of view, providing a comprehensive and easily understood approach to all the concepts discussed. Giovanni Campardo and Rino Micheloni have a solid track record of leading design activities at the STMicroelectronics Flash Division. David Novosel is President and founder of Intelligent Micro Design, Inc., Pittsburg, PA.

Abstract

In the last few years there has been significant progress in the development of microfluidics and nanofluidics at the application as well as at the fundamental and simulation levels. This book provides a comprehensive summary of these changes describing fluid flow in micro and nano configurations. Where as in their previous book entitled Microflows: Fundamentals and Simulation the authors covered scales from one hundred nanometers to microns (and beyond), in this new book they discuss length scales from angstroms to microns (and beyond). While still maintaining the emphasis on fundamental concepts with a mix of semianalytical, experimental, and numerical results, this book outlines their relevance to modeling and analyzing functional devices. The text has been divided into three main subject categories: gas flows; liquid flows; and simulation techniques .The majority of the completely new developments in this book are in liquid flows and simulation techniques chapters with modified information throughout the rest of the book. This book can be used in a two-semester graduate course. Also, selected chapters can be used for a short course or an undergraduate-level course. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in fluid mechanics, physics, and in electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering. Review of earlier volume on Microflows from the European Journal of Mechanics B/Fluids, 2002: "For those who want to compute flows at the micro scale, this monograph is a must. It describes the state of the art and helps by providing the coefficients, such as needed in situations of slip. Those who wonder what new fluid dynamics there is in the microworld are served by the overview of theory and treasures of numerical methods.".
